Airtel Digital TV will be avilable through over 21,000 Airtel retail outlets spread over 62 cities across India. The number of channels that will be made available through Airtel Digital TV is 175 which will include all entertainment, sports and news channels among other regional channels.

This move by Bharti Airtel comes as a part of its “Three Screens” strategy because of which Airtel is now present across Mobiles, Computers as well as the Television screens. Airtel is already a leading player in terms of telecom and broadband services across the country. And now, with its already established brand equity and network, Airtel is soon to become a major player in the satellite television market as well. With over 225 million houseolds in India and only 3-4 percent of these households availing DTH services at the moment, this seems to be the most appropriate time for Bharti Airtel to tap this growing market opportunity.

To compete with the current players in the market, Airtel will be providing different packages in Northern and Southern India. The DTH service will start at Rs.2499 in Northern India and at Rs.1999 in Southern India. Depending on the selected channels, the monthly charges would range from Rs.125 to Rs.424.

In addition to the regular services provided by all other players in the market, Bharti Airtel promises to bring in an array of unique features to steal customers from their competitors. These include superior technology (MPEG4 standard with DVB S2), automatic balance indicator, 10 World Space channels and variety of packages to cater to different categories of customers. Airtel Digital TV will also address the issue of managing 2 separate remotes for the television and the set-top box.
